Russian forces gain foothold in strategic Ukrainian town

Russian troops are making a concerted push in eastern Ukraine and have gained a foothold in the strategic hub of Pokrovsk, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says. Moscow's soldiers outnumber Kyiv's 8-1 in the area and Ukraine cannot match that, Zelensky added while insisting Russia had not yet achieved the planned result. Russia has been trying to capture Pokrovsk for two years. The key supply and transport hub provides supplies and reinforcements to the eastern front - and it would get Moscow closer to occupying the entirety of the Donetsk region. It would also put towns of the heavily fortified fortress belt - Kramatorsk, Slovyansk, Kostyantynivka and Druzhkivka - within easier reach of Moscow.


Classification of HI Galaxy Profiles Using Unsupervised Learning and Convolutional Neural Networks: A Comparative Analysis and Methodological Cases of Studies

Hydrogen, the most abundant element in the universe, is crucial for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The 21 cm neutral atomic hydrogen - HI spectral line maps the gas kinematics within galaxies, providing key insights into interactions, galactic structure, and star formation processes. With new radio instruments, the volume and complexity of data is increasing. To analyze and classify integrated HI spectral profiles in a efficient way, this work presents a framework that integrates Machine Learning techniques, combining unsupervised methods and CNNs. To this end, we apply our framework to a selected subsample of 318 spectral HI profiles of the CIG and 30.780 profiles from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey catalogue. Data pre-processing involved the Busyfit package and iterative fitting with polynomial, Gaussian, and double-Lorentzian models. Clustering methods, including K-means, spectral clustering, DBSCAN, and agglomerative clustering, were used for feature extraction and to bootstrap classification we applied K-NN, SVM, and Random Forest classifiers, optimizing accuracy with CNN. Additionally, we introduced a 2D model of the profiles to enhance classification by adding dimensionality to the data. Three 2D models were generated based on transformations and normalised versions to quantify the level of asymmetry. These methods were tested in a previous analytical classification study conducted by the Analysis of the Interstellar Medium in Isolated Galaxies group. This approach enhances classification accuracy and aims to establish a methodology that could be applied to data analysis in future surveys conducted with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), currently under construction. All materials, code, and models have been made publicly available in an open-access repository, adhering to FAIR principles.


Using Artificial Intelligence to Unlock Crowdfunding Success for Small Businesses

While small businesses are increasingly turning to online crowdfunding platforms for essential funding, over 40% of these campaigns may fail to raise any money, especially those from low socio-economic areas. We utilize the latest advancements in AI technology to identify crucial factors that influence the success of crowdfunding campaigns and to improve their fundraising outcomes by strategically optimizing these factors. Our best-performing machine learning model accurately predicts the fundraising outcomes of 81.0% of campaigns, primarily based on their textual descriptions. Interpreting the machine learning model allows us to provide actionable suggestions on improving the textual description before launching a campaign. We demonstrate that by augmenting just three aspects of the narrative using a large language model, a campaign becomes more preferable to 83% human evaluators, and its likelihood of securing financial support increases by 11.9%. Our research uncovers the effective strategies for crafting descriptions for small business fundraising campaigns and opens up a new realm in integrating large language models into crowdfunding methodologies.


Japan to bolster support for chipmaker Rapidus in semiconductor push

Japan's trade minister has pledged the government will hike its financial support for chipmaker Rapidus as it works to develop cutting-edge semiconductors, arguing domestic production of such components is essential for the country to excel in artificial intelligence and autonomous driving. "I have high hopes that Rapidus can mass produce 2-nanometer chips and beyond in Japan, and the government is ready to continue and beef up financial support to the company as it will need to spend trillions of yen to make that happen," Yasutoshi Nishimura, minister of economy, trade and industry, said in an interview. Tetsuro Higashi, former chairman of Tokyo Electron, and Atsuyoshi Koike, former president of Western Digital, established Tokyo-based Rapidus last year with the goal of making the cutting-edge, 2-nanometer chips in Japan by 2025. 25,000 students fill National Stadium to take Artificial Intelligence test

KARACHI: More than 25,000 students from different parts of Sindh participated in the Presidential Initiative for Artificial Intelligence and Computing (PIAIC) grand entrance test 2022 here at the National Stadium Karachi (NSK) on Sunday. The initiative is launched to empower youth through training and providing them financial support to become entrepreneurs. Organised by the Saylani Welfare International Trust (SWIT), the test was witnessed by President Dr Arif Alvi, who also addressed the participants and advised them to work hard and focus on information technology. President Alvi asks youth to avail PTI govt's loans scheme to become entrepreneur "Once you complete your education and training, you would avail thousands of opportunities in this sector across the world," he said in his address before the test. "The government is extending all kinds of support to the IT sector and laws have been made to facilitate the growth of this sector," he said.

Making Sense of DeepMind's First-Ever Profit

According to a corporate filing with the UK company registry published on Tuesday, Google-backed artificial intelligence research firm DeepMind turned a profit for the first time last year and saw a significant rise in its revenues. As per the filings, its sales rose by £560 million last year, touching £826 million, compared to £266 million in 2019. The surge in revenue helped the company turn its first profit of £43.8 million, compared to a loss of £649 million the previous year. The research lab draws its revenue from research and development carried out for other companies under the Alphabet umbrella, including Google, YouTube and X, the moonshot division. Headquartered in Kings Cross, London, DeepMind was founded by Demis Hassabis in 2010.

"We" is a collective noun that takes on different forms depending on the context it is used in. A Christian can address a group of Christians and say the word "we" and it is to whom they are referring.


New DeepMind scholarships create AI study opportunities for postgraduates

New scholarships offer students from underrepresented backgrounds the chance of postgraduate study in AI and machine learning. Interdisciplinary artificial intelligence group DeepMind has renewed its philanthropic commitment to postgraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds who wish to study AI and machine learning at Imperial's Department of Computing. A gift to the Department from DeepMind will support six new postgraduate scholarships in AI and machine learning over the next few academic years. DeepMind's gift provides funding for four Master's-level scholarships and two PhD scholarships, all with a focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning. The scholarships are targeted at groups who are currently underrepresented in computing, particularly women and those from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.


Binhai Vows More Financial Support for Smart Manufacturing

In 2019, the local government rolled out an action plan for accelerating the high quality growth of Binhai New Area, vowing that the area would become a world-class innovation center driven by intelligent manufacturing. The fund was expected to facilitate cooperation among global intelligent engineering technology centers and Binhai's Sino-German Industry 4.0 intelligent manufacturing center, its integrated circuit center, automotive electronics and automated driving center, and intelligent transportation center. An industrial development fund was also established to support intelligent technology, biomedicine, new energy and new materials, aerospace, and equipment manufacturing.
